Why 800VDC — and why now
AI racks are moving past 100 kW, and the industry answer is 800VDC distribution. NVIDIA's 800 VDC reference architecture, the Open Compute Project specification it is driving with Google and Microsoft, and 800VDC rack platforms arriving in 2026–2027 all point the same way. Moving distribution from 415/480VAC to 800VDC carries roughly 85% more power through the same conductor size, removes conversion stages, and makes it simpler to tie energy storage straight onto the bus. The same voltage class has been standard in utility-scale solar and battery storage for years — markets EPEC has served with UL 891 switchboards since the company was founded.
EPEC builds the DC distribution gear that sits between the rectifier or solid-state transformer and the rack: transformer-rectifier lineups, DC distribution switchboards and DC PDUs, all on a UL 891 bus structure and all designed and built in North Carolina.
800VDC switchboard types we build
Every lineup below shares the same UL 891 bus structure — 1200–6000A, rated up to 800VDC — with the protection device chosen to fit the application.
Transformer-Rectifier Units (TRU)
- Complete AC-to-DC lineup: AC incoming section with air circuit breaker, AC–DC rectifier section, DC–DC section and DC disconnect outgoing section
- Skid-mounted with the step-down transformer, close-coupled bus troughs and a liquid-cooling package, shipped as a factory-tested assembly
- 13.8 kV or 34.5 kV primary; 800VDC output to the data hall or DC switchboard
DC distribution switchboards — electromechanical DC circuit breakers
- DC-rated electromechanical breakers, 800–6000A, with DC protective relays
- Main, tie and feeder duty where a proven mechanical interrupt is specified
- Full metering, PLC/HMI and communications integration
DC distribution switchboards — fused DC disconnects
- DC-rated disconnect switches with DC fuses, mains up to 4000A
- The simplest and fastest-to-deliver protection scheme for feeders where fuse clearing is acceptable
- Lockable, visible-break isolation for maintenance
DC distribution switchboards — solid-state circuit breakers (SSCB)
- Solid-state feeder breakers, 250–2500A, with programmable trip settings and arc-free interruption in microseconds
- Built around the leading SSCB platforms rather than a single house brand (device UL listings in progress)
- Direct bus or cable input from a rectifier or solid-state transformer
DC PDUs — solid-state circuit breakers
- Row-level 800VDC power distribution units with SSCB branch feeders in the 125–250A class for busway and rack drops
- Designed to pair with a partner's SST or rectifier as a packaged lineup
- Branch metering and communications to the BMS/DCIM
DC PDUs — DC contactors and fuses
- Electrically operated DC-rated contactors with a DC fuse ahead of each branch, 125–4000A
- Remote open/close and status through PLC/HMI; available now with short lead times
- A proven electromechanical alternative while SSCB listings complete

Open-architecture DC protection — the right device, not the house brand
Open-architecture DC protection
EPEC is not tied to one breaker catalog. Large switchgear OEMs build DC gear around their own devices; EPEC selects the best available DC-rated protection for each application and integrates it on the same UL 891 bus:
- Solid-state circuit breakers from leading SSCB manufacturers
- DC-rated electromechanical circuit breakers and protective relays
- DC-rated contactors with DC fuses, and DC molded-case circuit breakers
- PLC, HMI and communications integration across all of them
Specify the protection scheme your design calls for — electromechanical, fused or solid-state — and get one UL 891 lineup from one supplier.
UL 891 listed and short-circuit tested to 800VDC
UL 891 listed, short-circuit tested to 800VDC
EPEC's Modular and ModLite switchboard families are UL 891 listed with bus structures certified to 800VDC. The enclosure, bus, bracing and insulation system are already qualified for 800VDC service, so adding a new DC protective device means device-level testing — not a new switchboard certification. That is why EPEC can offer electromechanical, fused and solid-state DC lineups on one listed platform.
- Bus structure certified to 800VDC under UL 891
- Device-level testing completed per protective device
- UL 891 switchboards powering more than 2 GW of DC, PV and BESS projects
Engineers who have built DC systems before
DC engineering depth
Our DC team includes three engineers whose background is DC traction power — rail systems that run high-current DC switchgear, rectifiers and DC protection every day. That experience carries straight into 800VDC data center gear: DC fault behavior, breaker and fuse coordination, rectifier and SST integration, and DC arc-flash considerations. With design, UL 891 listing and manufacturing all in North Carolina, you work with one team from one-line review through factory acceptance testing.
- One-line and protection-scheme review with your engineer of record
- Short-circuit, coordination and arc-flash support for the DC bus, including storage fault contribution
- Factory acceptance testing and commissioning support (FAT through site acceptance)
Where 800VDC switchboards are used
- AI and HPC data centers — 800VDC distribution from the rectifier or SST to busway, row-level DC PDUs, and both sidecar and centralized DC architectures
- SST and rectifier OEM lineups — DC switchboards engineered to pair with a partner's solid-state transformer or rectifier as a packaged, factory-tested lineup
- Battery energy storage — DC collection and distribution between power conversion and battery strings, and switchboard-connected storage on the 800VDC bus
- EV charging depots — DC distribution to high-power chargers, indoor or outdoor, skid-mounted where the site needs it. See EV charging.
800VDC switchboard FAQ
Is EPEC's 800VDC switchboard UL listed?
Yes. It is built on EPEC's UL 891 listed Modular and ModLite families, with bus structures certified to 800VDC. Protective devices are qualified at the device level; solid-state breaker listings are in progress.
What ratings are available?
Bus ratings from 1200A to 6000A, rated up to 800VDC. Protection ranges from 100A molded-case breakers to 6000A DC electromechanical breakers, with solid-state and contactor-plus-fuse options in between.
Should I specify electromechanical, fused or solid-state protection?
Electromechanical DC breakers suit high-current mains and ties where a proven mechanical interrupt is required. Fused disconnects and contactor-plus-fuse branches are the simplest and fastest to deliver. Solid-state breakers give the fastest, arc-free clearing with programmable settings. EPEC will review your one-line and recommend a scheme.
Can the switchboard connect directly to a rectifier or solid-state transformer?
Yes. Lineups accept direct bus, cable bus or cable input from a rectifier or SST, and can be delivered as a complete transformer-rectifier unit with the transformer and cooling package on one skid.
Can energy storage connect to the DC bus?
Yes. Switchboard-connected energy storage is a standard option, and the fault contribution from storage is included in the protection and short-circuit review for the lineup.
